Overview

It’s not unusual to hear these one-off songs from Peg Leg Howell’s discography; Please Ma’am is another from his repertoire of which there isn’t really a similar structured tune that he plays.

Guitar-wise, it is similar to some of his other alternating bass songs in that he plays the alternating bass starting with the note that most other players used as the alternating note, if that makes sense. In this case, he starts with the 5, aka the open 5th string, then moves to the 1, aka the open 4th string. It kind of throws the brain into a bit of a loop to play it like that, but over time you can get used to it. On top of that, he mostly plays simple, delicate slide notes on the treble side that align with his vocals, and he also makes brief visits to the IV chord here and there.

Please ma’am, please ma’am, baby
Take me back, try me once
One more time, please ma’am
Please ma’am, won’t treat you wrong
No more
‘F you take me back, please ma’am

Been begging you, all night long
I’ll acknowledge I done wrong

Please ma’am, please take me back
Try me once, one more time
Please ma’am

Begging you, all night long
I’ll acknowledge I done wrong

Please ma’am, take me back
Try me once, one more time
Won’t do wrong, no more
Please ma’am, babe, take me back
Try me one more time
Please ma’am
